39. Yeshua says: The dogmatists and the scriptualists have received the keys of recognition, but they have hidden them. They did not enter, nor did they permit those to enter who wished to. Yet you—become astute as serpents and innocent as doves.

2This term (like Sadducees’ as well) is difficult to render in a way that is relevant to modern readers and circumstances—for of course both types are all-too familiar thruout history: the Sadducees as the centralized, wealthy, powerful and therefore conservative religious leaders; the Pharisees as the ubiquitous, more liberal but nonetheless dogmatic, teaching clergy. I have finally settled on that dogmatism in religious instruction, as perhaps expressing the essence of the pharisaical in NT times.
